Work in Canada

To protect the local job market, Canada stipulates that only foreigners with legal work visas have the right to work locally and need to abide by the corresponding rules and regulations. Holding a Canadian work visa not only provides the legal right to work in Canada, but also facilitate you to choose to become a permanent resident through different programs.

Pathways

1. Closed Work Permit

Temporary Foreign Worker Program TFWP allows individuals who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents to fill in labor shortages in Canada that cannot be filled by Canadians.  Before hiring employees, Canadian employers must first apply for LMIA or through other projects to obtain the right to hire overseas employees and meet certain conditions. Permit holders need to work only for this employer.

2. Open Work Permit

Open work permit is mainly for the benefit of Canada. Foreigners from other countries that have mutually  agreement with Canada will enjoy this benefit,  such as Working Holiday Visa in Europe and many countries. An open work permit will also open another door for foreigners already in Canada, but again, its guiding principles are still for the benefit of Canada and through certain agreements, such as

  1. Refugee waiting period: Applicants who apply for refugees and government protection can apply during the waiting period while waiting for the result.
  2. Spouse work permit: Applicants who already have a legal study or work visa and status in Canada, their spouse can apply for an open work permit, which is what we often call a spouse work permit.
  3. Graduation work permit: Students who have completed the designated DLI study in Canada can apply for a graduation work permit for up to 3 years. Note that not all DLI school students can apply for a graduation work permit.
